Problem due to the fact that .lei file cannot be viewed using the default text editor

One option is to grey out the "View" option for such file.

Typical Windows problem. Had the same experience with other companion files, or indeed, Original Metadata downloads on Windows. After some dodging and searching, the viable option was to open the files in Excel. Unfortunately, this had to be done via Excel, for some reason Windows did not list Excel in the list after "Open With" was tried. In Excel, the hashes which separate the data are recognized immediately and the output is quite decent. Not sure how to pass this suggestion to users. Just clicking on the downloaded text is exasperating though, as it is unreadable. Microsoft Word did not help either.

Sorry, on the second read, in this ticket the problem does not deal with downloaded data, but viewing them directly in Acquisition tab. Will have a look at this case.

Managed to repeat with lei companion file. Exactly the same picture as reported here by @saloynton. It happens on our "classic" 56 image lei file. Interestingly, the Companion file of a dv image is displayed okay - see screenshot.

Also, the companion of the lei took 15 sec to open (the dv opens immediately). Done on Win7, 4.4.9 build.

Tried also to download this file on Mac. Then opened it with TextMate? and Sublime Text and Microsoft Excel. All look strange, Excel is probably still the most readable, but with scrambled signs as well (see screenshots).

So we probably have to think not only about the View option, but also about the Download option of this file ? Is there any other obvious programme to open these files in (leica viewer ?).

I would recommend to put up a warning in case of .lei or other non-standard companion ifles in the sense: sorry, the right software to open this type of files not known. You might experience some viewing problems with the default viewing program. Try to download instead.
I can see though that this can be cumbersome, as there might be other "quirky" companion files like that. Possibly it is worth to single out .lei for the reasons of it being a widely used format and hope for the best ?
Not ideal, but probably the best I can think of.

I assume that we do actually ask the operating system to view/mark the file using the mimetype from the original file table?

comment:9 Changed 10 years ago by jburel

Need to check if a "meaningful' mimetype is set, which I doubt for such file.

One possible solution:

  • Add a "View with" option
  • I will also replace the term View by Open everywhere for consistency.

I will suggest doing that in Beta3, first thing, since we will have to update the screenshots for the help and the change of terminology will have to be done in both Web and Insight

  • Milestone changed from 5.0.0-beta2 to 5.0.0-beta3

Looking at the screenshots again, I noticed that we also have encoding issue.

comment:15 Changed 9 years ago by jburel

  • Resolution set to invalid
  • Status changed from new to closed

Marking this file as invalid since we no longer create a original.txt file
No encoding issue noticed.

  • Milestone changed from 5.1.4 to OMERO-5.1.4

Splitting 5.1.4 due to milestone decoupling
