BUG: Default Web Site

Reported by: pwalczysko Owned by: spli

Description

On Windows server, during work on https://trac.openmicroscopy.org.uk/ome/ticket/12203 @kgillen discovered following discrepancy.

The default (forcible default) for the website for OMERO.web is <server-name>/omero
Every time bin/omero web iis is executed, this command creates a /omero and /static folders. This means it fiddles with the iis configuration of the user - this is

a) unexpected
b) unfortunate because it takes away flexibility and monopolises the iis for omero

The solution would be to have omero fiddle with iis only the first time, during the install, not for example for upgrades (but note that at present, the upgrades are asking for another execution of bin/omero web iis)

This is not completely clear from our docs !!!!!!!

I have looked in both http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/support/omero5.1-staging/sysadmins/server-upgrade.html and http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/support/omero5/sysadmins/server-upgrade.html and none of them requires running bin/omero web iis. I agree that the current way of deploying OMERO.web with IIS isn't ideal, but it does save us a lot of work. An alternative could be http://pytools.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=wfastcgi, but I didn't manage to get it working.

Bottom line: If there are any specific places that need correcting in the docs, then please specify them and they will be promptly taken care of.

  • Milestone changed from 5.1.0-m1 to 5.1.0-m2

Simon's begun fixing this: https://github.com/openmicroscopy/openmicroscopy/pull/3090 but I'm not sure if that will cover all of this.

Pushing to m2.

Pushing again. Ola, any thoughts?

  • Owner changed from atarkowska to spli

Simon, wasn;t that fixed by your PR? If so, could you please look at the doc as well?

3090 adds support for a custom prefix, but it doesn't change the delete/reinstall logic- and I've no idea whether it would work without that.

Reading through this again, what exactly is the requirement?

comment:7 Changed 10 years ago by spli

  • Component changed from Services to Documentation

Clarification from Petr: Documenting this limitation is sufficient.
