Bug: can't open attachments in Insight under Linux

Reported by: mtbcarroll Owned by: dlindner
Priority: minor Milestone: 5.1.2
Component: Insight Version: 5.0.0
Keywords: n.a. Cc: ux@…
Resources: n.a. Referenced By: n.a.
References: n.a. Remaining Time: n.a.
Sprint: n.a.

Description

Under Linux with a dev_5_1 build if I attach a local document to an image, then right-click the file in the meta data to view, or use Open With from the Attachments tab, then the Opening activity just hangs in the activities window and never opens my chosen application. I have tried this under both Oracle's JDK 6 and OpenJDK 7 with the same result.

Furthermore, in https://www.openmicroscopy.org/community/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7435 a similar issue is reported for 5.0.0.

I observe that my Insight log has entries like,

2014-02-28 15:14:40,744 ERROR [ o.o.shoola.env.ui.OpenObjectLoader] (entQueue-0) Data Retrieval Failure: java.lang.NullPointerException
	at org.openmicroscopy.shoola.env.data.views.calls.FilesLoader$2.doCall(FilesLoader.java:124)
	at org.openmicroscopy.shoola.env.data.views.BatchCall.doStep(BatchCall.java:144)
	at org.openmicroscopy.shoola.util.concur.tasks.CompositeTask.doStep(CompositeTask.java:226)

	at org.openmicroscopy.shoola.util.concur.tasks.ExecCommand.run(ExecCommand.java:276)
	at org.openmicroscopy.shoola.util.concur.tasks.AsyncProcessor$Runner.run(AsyncProcessor.java:91)
	at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:724)

It may be relevant that I don't have much GNOME or other heavyweight desktop environment installed.

  • Milestone changed from Unscheduled to 5.0.1

J-m: do you already have another Linux target or is 5.0.1 ok for now?

comment:3 Changed 10 years ago by jburel

no specific linux target. fixing other issue with open with so 5.0.1 is fine

  • Milestone changed from 5.0.1 to 5.0.2

Problem has been fixed in a private branch (https://github.com/jburel/openmicroscopy/tree/open-with-dev_5_0). I was hoping to have that work for 5.0.0 but partners (@sbesson, @mporter, @imunro-x) did not have the time to adjust their code.
Pushing to 5.0.2

For testing, note that I also see the issue if I try to view an import log.

Is there something specific one has to do to hit this problem? Tested with OpenJDK 1.7 on Debian/XFCE, no problem.

Demonstrated to Dominik. View doesn't work, but download does.

Looks like the 'Open/View?' functionality was (deliberately?) removed within https://github.com/jburel/openmicroscopy/commit/2b05e30398f959456851609581670464b1de40ff by @jburel, but the 'View' button is still left without functionality. But as the 'Download' button actually does what you'd expect from 'View' (download and view), I suggest to just remove the 'View' button, any objections?

Remove the view button.

It applies everywhere an external viewer is used, e.g., view import log after import.

Do we want to keep a ticket or card somewhere for,

  1. the other external-viewer things in Linux that also fail?
  2. restoring the view functionality for file attachments once the more general problem is addressed?

?

It will also happen for the "view" button in script dialog.

Reopened. Going to fix the "view" button in script and import dialog, too.
